Locke Copenhagen is the hottest new opening in the Danish capital and it has certainly been worth the wait. Locke’s debut hotel in Scandinavia is an impressive affair, occupying two newly-built glass rotunda towers in Copenhagen’s emerging Postbyen district.
Locke is my favourite hotel brand for an affordable city break and it’s always interesting to see which destinations they pop up in next. Each property is entirely unique and you can expect beautifully-designed interiors, chilled out social spaces, central locations and the freedom that comes with a mini apartment.
Location
Locke Copenhagen is conveniently situated in the new Postbyen urban district, just moments away from Central Station. The tall glass towers are impossible to miss, however it’s initially a little tricky to locate the entrance (walk around the back of Villa Copenhagen and up the steps).
The hotel is an easy walk into the city centre and on the doorstep are the Tivoli Gardens , Glyptotek and the many eateries of the buzzing Meatpacking District.
Design
Locke’s 234 studios, apartments and penthouse apartment have been designed by Grzywinski+Pons, the New York architects behind London’s Leman Locke, Whitworth Locke in Manchester and Eden Locke in Edinburgh.
London-based A-nrd has overseen the ground floor social and dining spaces, bringing warm Danish design and a sense of hygge to an otherwise austere new build. Expect terrazzo floors, handcrafted tiles, custom oak seating and natural textiles in rich, earthy tones.
Arrival
Check-in was quick and we were warmly welcomed by the friendly front desk staff. The open-plan lobby is a gorgeous space to spend some time, with Mid-Century Modern plush velvet seating, graphic rugs, wooden art sculptures and curvy lamps.
The studio
Our spacious City Studio high up on the 19th floor was absolutely dreamy and the perfect place to call home for a few days.
The building’s exposed concrete structure is given warmth with oak floors, sage green tones, natural textiles and a playful splash of mustard yellow – Danish simplicity at its best.
The studio features a sumptuous king-size bed with high quality linen, a curated selection of books, ample storage space, Smart TV with Chromecast, fast wifi, USB/USB-C charging throughout and powerful air-conditioning. There is also a cosy seating area with a glass dining table and wooden benches covered with leather cushions framing the floor-to-ceiling windows, offering lots of natural daylight and fabulous views over the city.
The kitchen
A convenience of staying at Locke is the fully-equipped, sleek matte black kitchen, complete with washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven, table and glassware and a kettle with tea and coffee.
If you’re inclined to do some cooking during your time there, take advantage of the incredible local organic produce at the Torvehallerne food market. There’s also a BAO cookery book by the bedside for inspo.
The bathroom
Our bathroom was petite but stylish and well-designed with a fabulous walk-in shower, fluffy towels, large arched mirror and a full set of Locke’s signature Kinsey Apothecary bathroom amenities with delicious scents like salted caramel vanilla and Himalayan hibiscus.
Dining at Locke
Informal ground floor restaurant LUQA offers Italian classics with some fun surprises like tableside Tiramisu, Negroni carts and evening DJ sets. It’s also a quiet spot for coffee and pastries during the day with plenty of outdoor seating. A rooftop cocktail bar will open later in the year with panoramic views over the city.
It’s early days in the development of the Postbyen district, but the complex will soon house some cool local eateries.
Locke Copenhagen is a fantastic addition to Copenhagen’s thriving hotel scene and it’s hard to beat what Locke offers for the price. If you love cool Danish design, a calm living space and a central location, it’s the perfect choice for a stylish city break.
