Bite Me Pizza in Notting Hill is the kind of pizza shop-restaurant that could easily become a local favourite. In fact, I hope to lure it over to the opposite side of the Central Line, so it can be my local pizza place, pronto.
At first glance, Bite Me Pizza is simply a nicely-designed pizza place, but the quality of the ingredients and the authenticity of the pizza make it a cut above the rest.
We visited on a quiet mid-week night and ordered our pizzas at the counter, sipping on San Pellegrino Aranciata while we waited. For something a little stronger, there’s a good selection of Italian beers and wines produced by family-owned vineyards.
Bite Me appears to be set up mostly for take-away, but actually the small seating area is pleasant and comfortable with chilli oil and fresh basil to season your pizza.
There’s a good range of suggested pizzas to choose from, but I decided to create my own pizza and went for a sensible combination of prosciutto crudo, artichoke and red pepper.
The pizza base was just as it should be – springy, chewy and slightly charred. Interestingly, Bite Me’s pizza dough is made using Khorasan wheat, which was apparently a hit with the ancient Pharaohs and is easier to digest for those sensitive to gluten.
The base was topped with a simple, juicy crushed tomato sauce and silky, creamy fior di latte. The prosciutto was high quality and plentiful, while the fresh peppers added sweetness and the artichokes were perfectly marinated.
Steven went for a pizza topped with meatballs, green peppers, sweetcorn and jalapenos. The meatballs were home-made and delicious, with good quality beef and plenty of fresh herbs. The green peppers were nicely charred and the chunky slices of jalapeno gave it a touch of heat.
Both pizzas were fantastic, but the ordering system could be improved by labelling the toppings that are behind the glass counter. If we didn’t have to decipher between the different cheeses and sliced meats unguided (although the staff were helpful), then we could’ve been a bit more adventurous with our combinations.
We were so busy deciding on pizza toppings that we overlooked the accompanying dips and were later brought a board of Dough Dippers with a selection of sauces to try. The fluffy, golden little parcels were so tasty and a perfect side, if you can handle extra dough. I loved the punchy, intense dips and my favourites were the sweet honey mustard and the home-made garlic mayonnaise.
I’d been looking forward to trying the Chocolate Pizza with Nutella and icing sugar, but somehow the pizza completed floored me. This is a rare occurrence for a self-confessed dessert fiend, so be assured that the pizzas really are that filling.
Bite Me Pizza is a fantastic local business and I really hope they expand soon to other areas. I like it that they value sustainability with locally-sourced ingredients free from chemical nasties, electric ovens, recyclable packaging and reclaimed timber and metalwork in the shop fit out.
Pizzas range from £6 for a Margherita to £14.50 for a Posh Pizza with white truffle olive oil and ‘create our own’ pizzas are charged by how many toppings you add (the suggested pizzas seem to be the best value).
If you’re around west London and fancy delicious Italian pizza with quality toppings, Bite Me Pizza is the place to go, or even better have it delivered to your door.
