The Lake District is the perfect destination for a relaxing weekend break in the UK. There are a number of idyllic hotels in the Lake District for a rejuvenating retreat. Many of my childhood summers were spent in the Lake District, but today, there are certainly more stylish places to sleep, eat and drink.
I have my eye on a stay at the Waterhead Hotel, a stunning boutique townhouse hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere near Ambleside. Guests can unwind with a facial or massage at the leisure club at sister property the Low Wood Hotel, with facilities including a 50ft swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, solarium, fitness room and squash court.
Cumbria is also a treat for foodies with lots of independent restaurants serving locally sourced produce to discover. Storrs Hall’s AA 2 rosette Terrace Restaurant boasts an elegant terrace and gardens with a spectacular view over Lake Windermere. Try head chef Luke Woodend’s Gourmet Menu, with selected dishes from the a la carte menu or a luxury picnic in the gardens.
Another culinary highlight is an indulgent 3 course Sunday Lunch at the Grill and Smokehouse at The Wild Boar Inn. Try the Roast Sirloin of Lakeland Beef, Roast Whole Chicken for two or Slow Roasted Shoulder of Lamb with all the trimmings.
The Lake District is a real outdoors place, so make the most of the fresh air with riverside walks, cycling and rock climbing, or work your way around the picturesque villages.
