Coralie Aude Grassin tucks into an American grill feast at NY Bar & Grill in Cobham, Surrey…
NY Bar & Grill is one of those handy addresses to have in your notebook. Just what you need after a tough day at and can’t face cooking – a spacious, colourful, soothing, yummy place.
Dimmed lights, candle on the table, bright pictures of New York on the walls will help you to switch to evening mode.
The room is wide enough to allow a balance of tables for groups and romantic corners – ideal headquarters as you can equally come with friends, family (even kids as they have a children menu) or with your partner.
Inspired by Manhattan steakhouses, the menu is definitely American. Not able to decide on a sole starter, we ordered a selection, together with a Cosmopolitan: cocktails are £5.95 0r £7.95 if you feel like a champagne mix so you might as well treat yourself… Why not try the Jacuzzi (peach snapps, gin, orange juice and bubbly) to add a festive touch to the evening?
Guys will fall for the Tennessee chicken wings (£4.95), marinated in either a Jack Daniel honey glaze or a BBQ sauce – plenty of meat, easy to eat, finger licking good.
Our waiter had discretely brought a bowl of warm water, quite a practical touch. The garlic bread is lovely, just out of the oven. Order it with cheese (£3.25) for an extra treat. But my advice would be to go for the New Orleans butterfly prawns (£6.95).
They were extra fresh and juicy, cooked in a delicious sauce of garlic, parsley and fresh chilli yet not too spicy, more invigorating. I will gladly come back for those alone.
Being French, my partner has a passion for red meat – steaks and burgers will always be his first choice on a menu. His eyes just lit up while reading through the main dishes list.
He went straight for the Nebraska rib eye (£16.95), cooked to perfection, with a rich mushroom and red wine sauce – thumbs up!
All their steaks are aged for a minimum of 21 days for extra flavour and the quality is definitely there. I settled for the Arizona Chicken Strips (£12.95), cooked Southern style: tender on the inside, crunchy on the outside, the way I remember it from the US.
Both are served with shoestring fries – our waiter had advised a side portion of creamy spinach that made me forget any idea of ketchup or sauce. We did spy on the appetising burgers passing by: their life expectancy in a plate seems to be of a mere 10 minutes.
You probably would have given up on desert at that point but the pecan pie (£5.35) came strongly recommended so we gave in. Nirvanesque! The creamy caramel melted in the mouth, the texture brought by the nuts was superb.
If you are a cheesecake fan, do try the cloud-like version on the menu (£4.95), very light, not too sugary, served with blueberry sauce – perfect with an espresso.
We loved being able to choose between an easy American dinner or alternate with a more refined touch – there is a fresh fish of the day option, a jambalaya (pan fried squids, prawns, chorizo, chicken with a Cajun sauce) and a variety of mouth-watering pasta assortments.
The NY Bar & Grill only opened in October but ticks so many boxes that it is sure to be a hit in Cobham. Now, I wonder whether they would consider selling a whole pecan pie rather than just a slice…
