Chérie Wishlist: Nobis Hotel, Stockholm

November 15, 2010 by

Ever wondered just what the term ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ has exactly to do with Stockholm?  The soon-to-open Nobis Hotel, housed in a former bank, holds the answer.

Not only is the Nobis a luxury design hotel with a curious heritage, it’s also as close as you can get to actually living in the Swedish minimal style temple…Acne.

The Nobis Hotel is situated on Norrmalmstorg – a square at the centre of the designer shopping and business district in downtown Stockholm.

The Acne and Marimekko flagship stores are located right in the hotel building and the Royal Castle and the National Museum are just a short walk away.

The Nobis is the original site of an attempted heist of a bank where the employee hostages famously developed an affinity with their captors, thus coining the term ‘Stockholm Syndrome’.  The Kreditbanken is now part of the Acne store at the Nobis Hotel.

The hotel is an interesting mix of traditional architecture and cutting-edge technology.  Guests even have the chance to check in our their mobile phones.

The Nobis Hotel’s homely, understated rooms are designed in calming shades of beige and oatmeal and use natural materials such as wool, wood, stone, leather and glass, which the hotel insists look better as they age.

The bathrooms are made entirely of white Carrara marble and the suites offer guests a variety of mood lighting, with ten different designer lamps to change the energy of the room.

The Grand Nobis Suite juxtaposes new and old more than any of the standard rooms and includes an impressive four rooms.

All rooms come with flat-screen TVs, a computer screen and iPod docks – everything you need for a hi-tech, comfortable stay.

The Nobis is set to be a hub of downtown Stockholm with Executive Chef Stefano Catenacci’s re-birthed Italian restaurant Caina open to non-hotel guests.

The Nobis Hotel also hosts the 24/7 Bistro, The Gold Bar and The Lounge, which are sure to become local haunts, showcasing the likes of Acne, J.Lindeberg and Carin Wester.

Wellbeing is also central to the hotel’s philosophy, with a sauna, steam room, gym and beauty treatments available at the urban retreat spa.

The Nobis Hotel pays tribute to the city’s intriguing past and design future and is at the centre of all things creative in Stockholm.

Nobis Hotel opens on 1 December 2010 and is available to book through designhotels.com
