York Literature Festival 2016 + Giveaway

February 23, 2016 by

York Literature Festival in association with Baille Gifford celebrates the best of the arts with a number of interesting events focusing on literature, spoken word, poetry, music, comedy, cinema and theatre.

Yorkshire has a rich literary history with famous writers including The Brontë sisters, Ted Hughes, Alan Bennett and Andrew Marvell hailing from the region.  York Literature Festival builds on this tradition and showcases a broad range of literary talent across two weeks in March.

Highlights of the festival are talks by former politician and travel writer Michael Portillo at the National Railway Museum, Scottish poet and playwright Carol Anne Duffy, Wendy Cope who penned the collection Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis and witty playwright (and ‘grumpy old man’) Arthur Smith.

Jane Austen fans are in for a treat with an Austen Society lecture by Dr Jane Darcy, exploring the much-loved classic Emma in context, as well as Austen’s Women, bringing to life 13 of her iconic heroines.

There are also events for aspiring writers including Writing the Future with Luke Kennard and Abi Curtis, We’re Not in Kansas Anymore by University of York and How NOT To Submit Your Manuscript.

You can really get to know the city of York with a Literary Walk, exploring significants sites that have appeared in novels and inspired the likes of Wilkie Collins, Susanna Clarke and Kate Atkinson.  It’s also the perfect excuse to stop at the famous Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms and discuss literature over an elegant afternoon tea or lunch.

Fancy taking in some culture at the York Literature Festival?  Chérie City and VisitYork.org are giving away two tickets the Wendy Cope talk on 12th March, two York Passes and £30 worth of book tokens to one lucky winner.

Simply follow @VisitYork, @YorkLitFest and @CherieCity on Twitter and tweet about the giveaway using #YorkLitFest.  The competition ends at 12pm on Monday 7th March.
