Bladerunner restaurant opens in Thessaloniki

June 6, 2010 by

Greece seems to be leading the way with cool design hotels at the moment and one of the most interesting ventures of the season is the opening of Chan, a Pan Asian restaurant and cocktail bar at The Met hotel in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Created by London-based architects Andy Martin Associates (ama), the team behind London restaurants Quo Vadis, Isola and Mash, Chan brings hi-tech contemporary Asian design to the style Greek hotel.

Chan is the antithesis of the white-washed tavernas and features super slick black and chrome furnishings, sculptural seating and the coolest, most sinister looking manga-inspired carpet.

The design is bold and imposing, and there is a lot of attention to detail, with tattooed graphics on the upholstery, an open grid ceiling and curvaceous seating arrangements.

ama spent months working on the design brief for the restaurant and visited Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia to try and capture the essence of contemporary Asian style, without using the most well-known emblems.

Andy Martin says, “I wanted to create a truly Asian atmosphere without the stereotypical visual references.  We looked at the contrast, which exists between traditional and contemporary Asian culture and with this duality between the two we have tried to integrate that sense in our design.”

Chan looks like the perfect place to come and escape the scorching heat and it really complements The Met’s chic, laid-back atmosphere.

I haven’t yet been to Chan, so can’t personally recommend the restaurant or the food, but I thought it would be an interesting place to spend the evening if you’re visiting Thessaloniki this summer.    If you go to Chan, or stay at The Met, let me know about your experience if it lives up to the image.

Chan, The Met Hotel, 26th October Str., 48 54 627 Thessaloniki, Greece.
